TUESDAY 10:00 - 11:00 am EST

Prerequisite: None

This class includes reading about explorers, map drawing lessons, and related activities.  Based on Ellen J. McHenry's text, Mapping the World with Art, thia class prepares students to begin the high school years with a clear mental map of the world. Short drawing tutorials available online or via DVD are available should students need them to assist in the construction of their weekly map. Since students study maps in the order of historical exploration, they build a historical understanding of the sequence of exploration. Each map will be stored in a page protector in a three-ring binder, building to a Notebook of World Geography by the end of the year.  Students will also enjoy interactive, multi-sensory learning opportunities through the extra activities described in the third section of the text.  By second semester, students will take turns presenting about the explorer topic of the week.  The last few classes will be spent putting together all the maps we have reviewed over the year into an independently drawn map of the world, 17x22 inches in size.  This provides a lovely finished product which is a keepsake and tool for future study.

Students will be required to scan or take photos of their drawings to submit for grades. The teacher is available during live office hours and by email to assist students. Assignments are graded and students receive a mid-term report as well as a year-end course completion form.
