This Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition class, approved by College Board as an official AP designated class, aligns to an introductory college-level literary analysis course. This class encourages students to read closely and critically analyze works from a variety of genres. Through reading literature, students deepen their understanding of how writers utilize language to for various purposes. Students explore a work's structure, style, and themes, as well as its use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. Writing assignments include expository, analytical, and persuasive essays requiring students to analyze and interpret literary works. This is an advanced class, reflecting college level work, requiring students to actively participate in class discussion and demonstrate the ability to handle a heavier workload.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Registered students are required to submit a literature inventory by July 2nd. The teacher will create the class book list based on the student surveys. Please email Mrs. Hempton with questions.
Weekly homework, with a strong emphasis on analyzing writing and composition, reinforces the concepts taught in class and the instructor is available during live office hours and by email to assist students. Assignments are graded and students receive a mid-term report as well as a year-end course credit report. Parents are responsible for scheduling their children for this AP Exam, which is offered each year in May. Local schools typically provide the test, but parents must register their children for the exam no later than May 15th. See the teacher for more information.
