An in-depth view of American history helps students develop a working knowledge of the major time periods and historical characters. Students spend four weeks each in the following time periods: Exploration and Native Americans; Colonial Times; the American Revolution and the Constitution; Westward Expansion; Slavery and the Industrial Revolution; Civil War to the 1900s; World War 1, the Depression and World War 2; and the Late Twentieth Century to Present. With this combined geography and history course, a map will be completed each week reflecting the events of the time period we are studying. Additionally, students explore topics via whole books, keep a timeline along with a student notebook and write, based on historical topics. Parents choose a book for each topic from a list developed by the teacher. This enables parents to use books from their local or home library whenever possible. Parents may also choose alternate titles subject to approval by the instructor.
Students will be expected to scan or take a picture of their work to submit for this class. The instructor is available during live office hours and by email to assist students. Assignments are graded and students receive a mid-term report as well as a year-end course completion report.
